Twenty-two-year-old Robbie Kennedy from Cwmbran, South Wales, introduced himself as a bricklayer by trade, a job he has been doing for six years. He confessed that singing was just a hobby—a passion he picked up only four and a half years ago by teaching himself to play guitar via YouTube. Living at home with his parents, he admitted that his longest gig to date was only half an hour at his local pub. His humble background, genuine nature, and slightly reserved demeanor made him appear unassuming, leading the judges to believe they were about to hear a simple, amateur performance.
Robbie began his audition with a powerful acoustic performance of a song that showcased his incredible, unexpected vocal talent. His voice was deep, resonant, and strong, delivering the notes with a clear, professional quality that was a stark contrast to his bricklaying day job. The judges were immediately captivated by the sheer power and emotional depth of his singing. However, a major plot twist occurred mid-song when the music changed, and he launched into the Goo Goo Dolls’ hit, “Iris.” This second song was an instant, overwhelming success, delivered with flawless control and raw passion that completely blew the audience away.
The judges were stunned by the transformation and the sheer volume of his talent. Alesha Dixon exclaimed, “Robbie, you are so likable… you just knocked me out, you’ve been blessed with a true gift.” Amanda Holden, after realizing he never sang in front of his workmates, said he was going to “absolutely knock them dead” when they saw the broadcast. Simon Cowell, the toughest critic, was particularly impressed, stating, “I wasn’t expecting that… I think if you put that record out you would have a number one hit with that song.” With unanimous praise and four “yeses,” Robbie proved that his passion was destined to replace his profession.
