He Just Returned From a War Zone! Then He Opened His Mouth and Made the Judges Sob!

Paul Ieti, a 21-year-old active-duty soldier in the U.S. Army, brought a deeply moving story to the America’s Got Talent stage. Originally from American Samoa and stationed in Savannah, Georgia, Paul had recently returned from a grueling nine-month deployment to Afghanistan. He explained to the judges that music was his ultimate sanctuary during the war; it was the “escape” that helped him and his fellow soldiers endure the fear and uncertainty of the battlefield.

When Paul began to sing Rihanna’s “Stay,” the audience and judges were instantly captivated by the surprising contrast between his tough military background and his incredibly soft, high-pitched, and soulful voice. His vocal delivery was filled with a rare kind of vulnerability and purity that felt entirely genuine. The performance was so touching that several judges, including Mel B and Heidi Klum, were moved to tears, eventually walking onto the stage to give him a heartfelt hug.

The judges’ feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with Howard Stern noting that Paul came out looking unassuming and nervous but revealed himself to be a “superstar.” They praised his ability to move people and captivate a room with such an unexpected sound. With four enthusiastic “Yes” votes, Paul moved forward in the competition, proving that strength and sensitivity can go hand in hand. His audition remains a powerful reminder of how music can provide comfort even in the most difficult circumstances.
