Forty-two-year-old Siobhan Phillips from Wakefield, Yorkshire, brought a unique and highly relatable comedy act to the Britain’s Got Talent stage. Introducing herself as a seasoned performer, she expressed her dream of having her own dedicated venue. Siobhan explained that she had written an original song about motherhood, a topic she became “familiar” with after having a baby at the age of 40. She humorously set the stage by announcing she couldn’t come up with a melody about cake, so she chose the far more chaotic subject of being a tired, wine-fueled new mum.
Siobhan’s performance, played on the piano, was a masterful blend of musical theatre and stand-up comedy. Her song detailed the hilarious, often brutal realities of parenting, from chronic sleep deprivation and looking “102” to the exhaustion of toddler years. The lyrics were packed with punchlines that resonated deeply with the parents in the audience, including her desire to “strangle Mr. Tumble with his spotted backpack” and her relief that her daughter was “far too young to discuss the Brexit deal.” The ultimate punchline was her hope that her daughter would grow up to marry Eric Cowell, presumably for financial stability.
The judges and the audience were in hysterics throughout the performance. David Walliams praised Siobhan, noting that comedy songs are difficult to execute but that she achieved “real belly laughs throughout.” Amanda Holden called her “brilliant” and found the song incredibly relatable, especially the parts about never getting to use the toilet in peace. Simon Cowell, clearly charmed by her wit, called the performance “very funny” and “endearing,” noting that she “lit up the room.” With her unique talent for musical comedy, Siobhan received four unanimous “Yes” votes, moving her closer to her dream of performing for a paying audience.
